EcoMonitoring is a research project dedicated to the development of an innovative system for the environmental monitoring of coastal, port, marine, and lake areas.

The solution integrates zero-emission autonomous aquatic drones (USV), smart buoys, RADAR SAR satellite data, Edge Computing technologies, and Artificial Intelligence to collect, process, and visualize environmental information in real time through an advanced digital platform.

The objective of the project is to improve environmental sustainability and safety through continuous and integrated water monitoring, enabling the timely detection of anomalies, the analysis of chemical-physical and bathymetric parameters, alarm management, and decision support for public bodies, port authorities, and land managers.

The project has led to the development of an integrated technological ecosystem comprising a Hydra® USV drone equipped for towing a data buoy, an automated platform for processing satellite data, a cloud-based Data Lake built on Databricks, and a dashboard for data visualization and alarm management. SONAR analysis algorithms for bathymetric surveys were also improved, and automated pipelines were developed for the acquisition, processing, and analysis of environmental data, demonstrating the effectiveness of the system in the sustainable monitoring of complex aquatic environments.

The EcoMonitoring project was carried out within the framework of the RAISE program — Robotics and AI for Socio-economic Empowerment — funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU under the PNRR, through the Call for Industrial Research and Experimental Development projects in the domains of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.
